Open Your Mind and say Aah

Years ago I lived in London where I studied at the Guildhall School of Music. It was the first time I'd been away from home and the first time I lived in, rather than just visited another country. Those were heady days and I thought absolutely everything was glorious. One thing that really caught my eye and that I've never forgotten was a poster in the Underground advertising one of the London papers. I can't remember the design, but I remember clearly the words: "Open Your Mind and Say Aah". As a young student, that really caught my attention - I was in a new, exciting place having my first adventure and my mind was open and saying aah to all the new experiences I was having.Since then I've been aware of times when something has forced my mind to make a shift in how I think about things. Sometimes it's positive and eye opening in the best sense. Other times it's negative and uncomfortable. My opinion of these embroidered pieces is still undecided. I admire the creativity, the artistry and the use of unusual materials. I'm not sure, however, that I like them or that I'm even comfortable looking at them.Art is all about stretching ourselves, seeing things in a new way, using materials differently, being open to an idea that was previously inconceivable.
