Blackwork: first phase finished

It didn’t take long to finish (just as I predicted!) the very last tulip and now the first phase is complete.

Each of the tulips and hearts will be edged in gold passing thread as will the large center design. I haven’t yet decided how to fill the center flower shape but am thinking of gold couched with black thread. The leaves I am thinking black (but not sure what or how) with gold edges and center veins. The lines and dots on the edges of the piece will be worked with gold paillettes and black beads or black paillettes and gold beads…or maybe pearls…

This piece is my inspiration – rich and elegant.

Here’s a slide show for you so you can see – up close and with the small imperfections that make it a hand made piece – all 8  heart and flower elements of the design and the center. Remember that each heart or tulip is 4 x 4 cm or 1.5 x 1.5 inches square.

Any input or opinions about the next steps? As always, I’d love to hear from you!

  1. Good heavens, those are amazing. I love the close up photos to compare with the overall view of the work. Images number 5 and 7 are my favorites. I can’t wait to see how this piece turns out.

  2. What wonderful results, my favourite is No 7.

These are wonderful crafts and what a wonderful craftsperson you are.

  3. Blackwork, hmm. Have to say I wasn’t very interested in this until now. Your detail work on the tulips is stunning. I love #5. On the leaves how about trimming in black with some gold on the leaf? Not sure what I would do, really looking forward to seeing the finished piece.
